IT'S ALL UP TO YOU...
Brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric had a pretty good life, despite the fact that their father up and disappeared when they were just kids. Unfortunately, their mother took it rather hard and ended up getting sick and dying. Studying their father's alchemy even before their mother's death, Ed and Al were determined to bring their mother back to life using human transmutation, the forbidden alchemy that is taboo against all alchemists. After training with an alchemy teacher, Izumi Curtis, they thought they'd had it all figured out and that it'd work for sure. They had all the ingredients, so why did it go wrong?
It went more than wrong, it was a disaster. As a result of the failed transmutation Edward lost an arm and a leg; Alphonse suffered much worse, losing his entire body and only at the last minute on efforts of Ed, having his soul attached to a cold, metal suit of armor so that he too wouldn't be lost forever.
Ed and Al traveled to Central City, Edward joining the military and becoming a State Alchemist, all with a secret motive: To find the mythical alchemy-amplifier, the Philosopher's Stone, and to restore what was lost.
